TALLAHASSEE — The Atlantic Coast Conference on Friday sternly penalized the Florida State women's soccer program after Seminoles coach Mark Krikorian elected not to bring his starters to the conference tournament in an apparent decision to rest them for the upcoming NCAA Tournament.
The ACC suspended Krikorian from coaching his team's next game and also levied financial sanctions against Florida State. The conference fined Florida State $25,000 and is forcing the university to forfeit its $15,000 reimbursement for travel costs to the league tournament.
Further, the ACC is sending a letter of reprimand to Krikorian and to Randy Spetman, the Florida State athletic director. Both Krikorian and Spetman will be expected to submit to the ACC and its women's soccer coaches a letter of apology by Nov. 12.
"I'm highly disappointed in the decision Florida State made and the integrity of our championships should never be compromised," ACC Commissioner John Swofford said in a statement. "It's important that the value of sportsmanship and leadership continue to be paramount in this league."
Florida State earlier this week traveled to the ACC women's soccer tournament in Cary, N.C., as the No. 4 seed. But Krikorian decided to leave his starters at home. The Seminoles suffered a 3-1 loss in their first-round game against Wake Forest.
