Preki joins list of coaches quickly fired

Preki was dismissed yesterday as the head coach of Toronto FC, which also saw Director of Soccer Mo Johnston removed from his post as well.

Ridge Mahoney of Soccer America writes of the disappointing tenure of Preki, and about previous MLS managers who were removed during such a brief coaching stint.

“When Preki was here, to be honest, there wasn't really any system,” said captain Dwayne De Rosario to the Toronto Sun. “That was the major thing missing in the training and preparation for the game. There was nothing to work with. That's something that has an effect on a lot of players.”

Assistant coach Nick Dasovic was appointed interim head coach with six games left in the regular season.

"What we had seen over the last several weeks was the team was heading in the wrong direction, but it was even bigger than that. The situation was not right, that's the best way I can describe it," said Tom Anselmi, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Maple Leafs Sports & Entertainment.

"In hindsight, we had the wrong two guys, and now we've got to do a real thorough search and find the right guy to lead this club, and really have a vision for where this club wants to go next, and what it needs from a total infrastructure standpoint."

Stars Dwayne De Rosario and Julian de Guzman said the relationship between the players and their ex-coach was a troubled one.

"I'm looking forward to the change and looking forward to pushing this team to the playoffs," said De Rosario said. "Preki definitely ran a tight ship and I don't think a lot of the players adapted to that. Nick obviously wants to loosen it up a little bit, let guys enjoy their play, and I think the guys will definitely respond to the way he wants us to play."
