Lost Plot Doomed Mowbray

A great manager needs to understand what factors will help make their team successful - the top of that list is being able to identify and acquire talented players, and then find the best tactics to accompany those players to allow them to find success.

Unfortunately for Celtic fans, Tony Mowbray wasn't able to do either in his 9 month stint as the manager at Celtic.

I was really discouraged when I read Mowbray's comments to the press after being dismissed, because he seemed to heap the ability to find success on the standard and style of play of the Scottish Premier League...opposed to the factors I mentioned earlier.

"Maybe it isn't a league for trying to force the game and be expansive," the shell-shocked boss said afterwards.

And, in a swipe at Rangers, he added: "Maybe it's a league for playing defensive, negative football and having quality up front to counter-attack."

You can read a lot between the lines of his comments to derive where Mowbray failed - clearly he didn't have a good understanding of the tactics of his opponents, and rather than adapt to their game to find appropriate tactics to counter his opposition, he merely ended up losing the plot.
