Recognizing Your Unsung Peers

I once had a player tell me that "you found a way of making the 18th player on our team feel like he was as important as the 1st player". My response was that regardless as to how important a player's role was on the field, that it had no bearing on their importance or self-worth as a person.

The reality is that the best leaders, be it coaches or players, do a good job of recognizing the efforts of the players around them - making sure that everyone feels important and part of the cause.

Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar praises the unsung heroes of the 2009/10 campagin who have helped put United in a strong position as the title race begins to gather pace.

The Dutchman was limited to just seven starts before Christmas, while injury also meant Rio Ferdinand started just eight games before the turn of the year. The likes of Jonny Evans and Wes Brown have covered admirably in defence, while Tomasz Kuszczak's performances in goal have not gone unnoticed by van der Sar.

"I’d like to go on record as saying what a good job Tomasz did over the last couple of months," says van der Sar, in an exclusive interview with United Review.

"With so many injuries in defense, it wasn’t easy for him to come in and perform so well under a lot of pressure."

That the Reds are in a position to strike is in no small part down to the displays of Kuszczak and co. "I thought he really played well in a difficult situation," adds Edwin. "I want to say well done to him."
