O'Brien sees flexible US roster

Former US International John O'Brien, on the US roster selected by Head Coach Bob Bradley-

"Looking at the list, there are a lot of midfielders. When I was coming up in the game, the best players always played in the center of the field. So maybe Bob Bradley has picked the best individual players. That is one strategy.

Another approach is to pick the best team, or pick the best team to beat a certain opponent. Deciding the team based on one’s opponents over the course of an unpredictable tournament can be difficult. The coach has selected enough different types of players — and flexible players — to tweak and twist the team’s approach game to game.

I think this will be evident in how Bradley structures the attack. Will there be two high forwards, one more withdrawn or an attacking midfielder giving offensive support? Watch for this.

A third of the players Bradley selected were at the last World Cup in Germany four years ago, and six of them played in games. This does not seem like much. I worry about continuity and experience. However, the team did play a major tournament a year ago against major teams and have major results. Also it seems many of the newer players have sufficient club experience to handle it. I am hopeful.

Good luck with preparations and go team U.S.A."
