Fulham can win the tactical battle

Tom Dart, The Times Football writer, previews the Europa League final between Atletico Madrid and Fulham:

Tactically, Fulham will want to keep it tight; Atletico to make it open. I think Fulham will approach it in the same way they did with the first leg of the semi-final in Hamburg: keep their shape and discipline, defend deep, soak up pressure and break on the counter-attack.

That strategy worked well defensively against Hamburg but in attack Fulham offered nothing as Zamora was half-fit and isolated because the quality of Fulham’s passing wasn’t good enough, the midfield didn’t move up in support quickly enough and the full backs stayed back.

They’ll need to find a better balance between defence and attack tonight if they want to win the game in 90 minutes. But we know from the Juventus and Hamburg second legs that Fulham won’t panic if they go behind and are capable of adjusting as the situation demands.
