Being bilingual helps

Growing up in the shadows of New York City and with two parents who taught in the South Bronx, they both preached the importance of understanding different cultures and being able to speak different languages.

It is easy to see how that would help in the coaching profession, and a good example of that is DC United's hiring of Curt Onalfo as their new head coach.

"One of the skills that we really believe is perhaps the most important skill of a successful coach is that ability to communicate," said team president and CEO Kevin Payne. "And while we didn't make it a requirement, it was absolutely a tremendous asset and a real advantage for Curt that he is bilingual."
