Mexican de los Cobos reportedly gets Fire job

Former Mexican league and El Salvador national team coach Carlos de los Cobos has come to terms with the Fire and will be named the fifth coach in franchise history next Monday, according to a league source.

De los Cobos, 51, replaces Denis Hamlett, the longtime Fire assistant coach who did not receive a contract extension after two years on the job and parted ways with the club in late November.

Mexican soccer fans will know de los Cobos largely for his playing and coaching days in the primera division, where he suited up for franchises such as Club America and Monterrey during the late 1980s and early 1990s. He also picked up 25 caps for the Mexican national team, including during the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.

De los Cobos managed a host of Mexican club teams after his playing days and was an assistant coach with the Mexican national team during the 1998 World Cup in France. That team featured former Fire star Cuauhtemoc Blanco, but the team failed to advance past the round of 32.

He most recently managed the El Salvador national team during qualifying for this summer's World Cup in South Africa. He led the team to the final round of CONCACAF qualifying, the furthest El Salvador had advanced since 1998.

De los Cobos' first duty will be the MLS SuperDraft on Jan. 14 in Philadelphia. He was chosen over a pool of candidates that included former D.C. United boss Tom Soehn and former Fire player Jesse Marsch.
