Leeds United's Simon Grayson is regarded as one of the promising young managers in English football, and proved it today with their historic 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the 3rd round of the FA Cup.
Grayson's men came into the game unbeaten in 15 games and having lost only twice all season, but they were still expected to be brushed aside by the Premier League champions. 42 league places separate the two clubs following the Yorkshire club's dramatic fall from grace during the last decade, but Grayson's side showed the rate of their recent revival with a memorable triumph.
It was a fully-deserved win for Leeds, and credit Grayson for putting his gameplan together with the intentions of coming right after the defending Premiership Champions. They were full of endeavour coming forward before Jermaine Beckford outpaced United's defence to score and, just as importantly, defended as if their lives depended on it afterwards.
"Obviously I am very proud of my team and what they've done today," said Grayson. "We worked very hard and I feel we deserved this win. I told the lads before the game to go out and make themselves proud whether they won or not and they've done that."
The tradition of the FA Cup is built around stories of the underdog David taking on the Goliath's of the higher levels, and today's Leeds victory will be one of the great tales of this tournament for years to come.
