Wayne Rooney will be fully fit for this summer’s World Cup according to Mike Phelan, the Manchester United assistant manager.
The England striker gave Fabio Capello yet another injury scare yesterday, when he suffered a recurrence of his groin injury during Manchester United’s 4-0 victory over Stoke City at Old Trafford.
The United forward has suffered with two other injuries in recent weeks (ankle ligaments and a damaged gluteal muscle) but his groin is becoming a cause for concern for Capello with England’s opening World Cup match against the United States less than five weeks away.
Rooney will be named in Capello’s preliminary 30-man squad tomorrow for the camp in Austria. The squad will be trimmed to 23 on June 1 after the warm-up matches against Mexico at Wembley on May 24 and Japan in Graz five days later and Phelan believes Rooney will be fit to do himself justice. “He should be OK,” he said. “All the phone calls and all the worries we can dispel straight away. He should be fine. It is just a precaution and he will be looking forward to his World Cup.”
