How Chelsea Won the Title

Congratulations to Chelsea Football Club for winning the 2009-10 English Premier League title.

The eventual margin over runner-up Manchester United was only a point, but the gap proved to be greater when you look in between the numbers. Matt Hughes of the Times writes of how Chelsea won the title.

In addition to reclaiming a trophy they last lifted three years ago Ancelotti’s players seemed intent on rewriting the record books, registering the highest goals tally in Premier League history of 103 and smashing their own record of 140 goals in all competitions over a season. “Boring, boring Chelsea,” as the home fans sang sarcastically in admiration.

Chelsea may not have been the most consistent of recent champions, but they won the most important matches when it mattered, demonstrating an impressive big-game mentality.

Hughes references the five key wins that he thought gave Chelsea the title, which was highlighted by last month’s 2-1 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford. As a United supporter, I certainly look at that match as the one that eventually did their title bid in. The reality is that Chelsea also did the double over Arsenal and Liverpool, who at the time were key players in the Prem and offered some key staging posts on the way to the title.

Chelsea are worthy champions, and I offer them humble congratulations on their title.
