Large College Soccer Crowds As Season Begins

Soccer America reports on the early season large crowds in college soccer.

Clemson drew its largest regular-season crowd ever when 7,423 turned out Friday night at Historic Riggs Field to watch the Tigers beat South Carolina. The win snapped a four-game losing streak in their Palmetto State derby, one of the nation's top non-conference clashes held each year.

-- Maryland drew the second largest crowd ever at Ludwig Field when 7,178 fans watched the Terrapins beat Stanford, 4-0, for their nationally televised game.

-- Creighton drew 5,425 fans -- the fourth largest in school history -- at Morrison Stadium for its 3-0 win over Drexel, the regular-season home debut of new head coach Elmar Bolowich.

-- San Diego's 2-1 win over San Diego State drew 2,967 fans Sunday night at Torero Stadium. They treated the fans to a thriller as Stephen Posa won the game on a goal in the 89th minute.

-- Harvard opened its 2011 campaign with a 1-0 win before 2,504 spectators at Soldiers Field Soccer Stadium Sunday evening.

-- UC Davis' crowd of 1,050 at Aggie Soccer Field for its 2-1 overtime win over UCLA, its first ever victory over the Bruins, was a sellout crowd.
