Stats tell the story for Messi & Hernandez

How special is Lionel Messi?

Martin Tyler writes of Messi's amazing goal tallies.

He has now scored 92 goals in his last 93 games, and he has 130 in 144 games under Pep Guardiola. His total for this season is 45 from 40 games and he is closing on the club record of 47 goals in a season, a record he currently shares with Ronaldo. His goals also saw him overtake Nicolas Anelka, Samuel Eto'o and Mario Gomez as this season's top Champions League scorer, an accolade he has won in the last two seasons. He also scored his 32nd Champions League goal, overtaking Rivaldo's record of 31 European goals for Barcelona.

Not that he needs the stats to back up his performances, but clearly we are watching the great player of his generation.

As far as the stats go, it also shows us that Javier Hernandez is evolving into one of the most efficient goal scorers in English Premier League history.

He now boasts the best goals-per-minute record in history. His consolation strike against Liverpool was his 10th Premier League goal for Manchester United with Opta clocking his playing minutes at 962. That means that on average, he scores a goal for every 96 minutes, 12 seconds that he is on the pitch. His 10 goals have also come from just 14 shots on target.

That puts him ahead of striking legends such as Thierry Henry (121.95 minutes per goal), Fernando Torres (126.2 minutes per goal) and Ruud van Nistelrooy (128.19 minutes per goal).

Courtesy of Opta, here are the best minutes per goals rates in Premier League history - and you may be surprised to see players such as Ivan Klasnic and Daniel Strurridge alongside the likes of Alan Shearer in the list.

Best mins per goal in PL history (minimum 10 goals):
