Spencer to Coach Portland Timbers

The Portland Timbers, who will join Major League Soccer as an expansion club in 2011, named John Spencer the first head coach in club history Tuesday.

Spencer spent the last five seasons as an assistant with the Houston Dynamo of MLS. He helped the Dynamo to back-to-back MLS Cup titles in 2006 and 2007 and four consecutive postseason appearances, including another run to the Western Conference final in 2009.

Prior to beginning his MLS coaching career, Spencer played for English clubs Chelsea, Everton and Queens Park Rangers, and Scotland's Rangers. In 2001, he joined MLS with the Colorado Rapids, where he played until he ended his career in 2004. During his time in Colorado, he played in 88 games and had 37 goals.

Spencer also earned 14 caps with Scotland.
